The past isn't dead. It hasn't even left the stage.
The Theatre History Project is an evolving collection of interactive websites, digital experiments, and creative learning experiences designed to bring the history of theatre off the page and into the hands of students.
Created by playwright and educator Timothy Braun, the project approaches theatre history not as a collection of dates, names, and dusty traditions, but as a living conversation between the past and the present. From ancient performance traditions to contemporary theatrical experiments, these websites invite students to explore how human beings have used performance to tell stories, challenge authority, build communities, and make sense of the world.
Each website offers a different doorway into theatre history, combining research, storytelling, technology, and a healthy willingness to play. Some invite exploration. Others encourage experimentation, creative problem-solving, and the delightful possibility of getting something wrong before discovering something extraordinary.
At its heart, The Theatre History Project is built around a simple belief: History isn't something students should simply memorize. It's something they should investigate, question, reinterpret, and make their own.
The past is still speaking.
We might as well join the conversation.
